Biofeedback and Progressive Relaxation Treatment of Sleep - Onset Insomnia :
نویسندگان
چکیده
Previous research suggests that self-defined insomniacs are distinguished from normals by high levels o f anxiety and physiological arousal, which might be mitigated by muscle relaxation. This study assessed the relative effects o f frontal EMG biofeedback, progressive relaxation, and a placebo set o f "'relaxation'" exercises on the sleep o f 18 onset insomniacs. Each subject was trained in one o f these three methods for six half-hour sessions and slept in the laboratory for two consecutive nights before and after training. The experimental groups demonstrated significant decreases in physiological activity during training while changes in the control group were minimal. Reductions in sleep-onset time were: biofeedback group, 29.66 minutes; progressive relaxation group, 22.92 minutes; control group, 2. 79 minutes. The experimental groups improved significantly (p < . 05) more than the control group, but did not differ from each other. No significant relationships between physiological levels and sleep-onset time were found, which suggests that muscle relaxation alone was not responsible for subjects" improvements. Since 20 minutes o f daily practice were required to achieve an approximate 30-minute decrease in sleep-onset time, the practical utility o f the methods is questioned.

Introduction : Chronic insomnia is a common complaint of hemodialysis patients. The present study has conducted to determine the effect of progressive muscle relaxation on insomnia severity of patients undergoing hemodialysis in hospitals affiliated with Shaheed Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in year 2010. Method : This study is a before and after quasi-experimental study. using pu...
متن کاملTreatment of chronic insomnia with yoga: a preliminary study with sleep-wake diaries.
There is good evidence for cognitive and physiological arousal in chronic insomnia. Accordingly, clinical trial studies of insomnia treatments aimed at reducing arousal, including relaxation and meditation, have reported positive results. Yoga is a multicomponent practice that is also known to be effective in reducing arousal, although it has not been well evaluated as a treatment for insomnia....
متن کاملThe treatment of psychophysiologic insomnia with biofeedback: a replication study.
To replicate a previous study, 16 psychophysiological insomniacs were randomly assigned to either Theta feedback or sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) feedback. Evaluations by home sleep logs and by 3 nights in the laboratory were done before biofeedback, immediately after biofeedback, and 9 months later. Results from this study replicate previous findings. Both Theta and SMR feedback seemed effective t...
متن کاملTackling sleeplessness: Psychological treatment options for insomnia
The purpose of the present paper is to review and summarize the research supporting nonpharmacologic treatment options for insomnia. The different treatment approaches are described followed by a review of both original research articles and meta-analyses. Meta-analytic reviews suggest that common nonpharmacologic approaches exert, on average, medium to large effect sizes on SOL, WASO, NWAK, SQ...
